The Adolescent Ward at Westmead Hospital has 8 beds for the management of medically compromised young people with eating disorders. Patients are admitted when they require managed re-feeding to reverse medical instability and facilitate engagement in ongoing psychological care. Patients are generally aged between 14 years and 9 months and 18 years and still attending high school. As this is a medical unit, patients with a history of significant psychiatric comorbidity such as severe mood disturbance, suicidality, self-harm, aggressive/violent behaviour, psychosis or some personality disoders are generally excluded as they are better managed in a mental health facility.

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
  • Binge Eating Disorder
