Projects

InsideOut’s mission is to transform the treatment landscape for eating disorders in Australia and to find a cure through innovative research, collaboration and an enduring path of inquiry.

Projects at InsideOut

InsideOut is leading several projects that aim to improve the healthcare journey and outcomes for people at risk of developing or living with an eating disorder, and their families and carers.

The projects include workforce development, strategy and policy development, treatment, and education and training.

Eating disorders are serious illnesses that need a whole of health and whole of community response, that’s why we work collaboratively with experts by their lived experience, and with support and input from clinicians, researchers, service providers and developers across Australia.

The following national projects are part of the Australian Government’s ‘Translation of Eating Disorder Evidence into Clinical Practice’ funding package to be completed by June 2022. For more information about the Australian Eating Disorder Research & Translation Strategy 2020-2030 click here.

National Projects

National Eating Disorder Research & Translation Strategy

Australian Government Department of Health

Australia’s first National Eating Disorder Research & Translation Strategy is being developed through a national consultation process. It will recommend the key strategies and actions for supporting eating disorder research - and the translation of research into real world prevention, early intervention and treatment across community and practice settings nationally.

March 2019-December 2020.

Essentials eLearning

Australian Government Department of Health

The federal government has funded places for clinicians across Australia to complete InsideOut’s Essentials eLearning program – that’s 17.5 hours of free, continuing professional development training.

Increasing the number of practitioners with foundational knowledge of eating disorders will improve the health system’s response and increase access to appropriate care.

May 2020-June 2022

Clinical Decision Support Tool

Australian Government Department of Health

The Clinical Decision Support Tool for General Practitioners is a digital innovation at ‘point of care’ to assist GPs in screening and care planning for people who present with eating disorders, or the early signs of one. This timesaving tool, developed in consultation with doctors and people with a lived experience of eating disorders, will deliver evidence-based information and care planning advice to GPs to improve their patients’ health care experience.

January 2020-June 2022.

An eTherapy Toolkit

Australian Government Department of Health

InsideOut is developing and piloting a Toolkit of evidence-based eTherapy resources to support the individualised treatment and recovery journey of people with eating disorders. The Toolkit will be informed by expert clinicians and people with lived experience of eating disorders. It can be used in a guided self-help model by general clinicians.

January 2020-June 2022.

A National Minimum Data Set

Australian Government Department of Health

This project will scope and develop a national minimum dataset for eating disorders to assist with planning and prioritising treatment and care. This project will be guided by experts in the field, service providers and governments. Consideration will be given to existing data collection processes.

July 2020-June 2022.

Scoping a National Registry for people with eating disorders

Australian Government Department of Health

Evidenced based service provision and treatment, and breaking down stigma, requires good information about the population at risk of developing or living with an eating disorder. This project will scope the feasibility of a national registry for people with eating disorders that gathers data from a range of sources. It will be conducted in collaboration with experts in the field, service providers and government.

July 2020-June 2022.
