InsideOut is Australia’s national institute for research and clinical excellence in eating disorders with global research partnerships. We aim to transform the treatment landscape for eating disorders in Australia, and ultimately find a cure.

Research at InsideOut

InsideOut has published more than 100 research papers in the 5 past years on treatments for eating disorders. We have conducted world-first research trials on psychotherapy for chronic Anorexia Nervosa, online treatment programs for Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder, and the world’s first trial of oxytocin treatment in Anorexia Nervosa.

Binge Eating eTherapy: An Online CBT Program for Bulimia Nervosa

NSW Health

InsideOut in collaboration with NSW Health is currently examining the effectiveness of a self-help, CBT-based online treatment program for individuals with Bulimia Nervosa titled Binge Eating e-Therapy (BEeT) in a randomised controlled trial.

We are currently recruiting volunteers with Bulimia Nervosa (16yrs+) for a free 12-week trial of the eTherapy program.

A Randomised Controlled Trial to Examine the Effectiveness of Oxytocin to Improve Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa

Ramsay Healthcare and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Austin Hospital Melbourne, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital

InsideOut in collaboration with Northside Clinic and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Austin Hospital Melbourne, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital are currently examining the application of a novel biological treatment, Oxytocin, for Anorexia Nervosa (AN). This randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial, funded by the NHMRC, investigates the efficacy of intranasal oxytocin as an adjunct to nutritional rehabilitation treatment in AN.

Eating Disorders and Obesity: The Integration of Health Promotion Messages

Boden Collaboration

InsideOut in collaboration with the Boden Collaboration are conducting a trial which aims to develop a set of health promotion messages that will be acceptable and effective in addressing eating disorders and obesity at the population level. These messages will be assessed by a broad range of stakeholders in the obesity and eating disorder fields. A trial assessing the effects these messages among the public will also be conducted.

The Staging of Anorexia Nervosa: 5 year follow-up of initial cohort

University of San Francisco, University of Otage and Kings College London

InsideOut in collaboration with the University of San Francisco, University of Otage and Kings College London are conducting a follow-up study of 171 individuals with Anorexia Nervosa whose severity of illness was assessed and staged between 5 and 7 years ago using the CASIAN instrument. The Anorexia Nervosa Staging system aims to provide a system of classification to enable opportunities for early intervention, to prevent illness progression, and to match treatments to stage for this group.

The Junior CASIAN for Children & Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa

Kings College London, Birmigham Eating Disorder Service

InsideOut in collaboration with our partners at the Kings College London, and Birmigham Eating Disorder Service are conducting a research trial developing a child and adolescent version of the CASIAN instrument used to stage Anorexia Nervosa in Adults. The instrument once validated will be used to identify kids early in the illness progression so as to help them gain access to services early and maximise remission rates.

Implementation of Evidence Based Treatment in Hospital-to-Community Pathways for Children and Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa.

Sydney Children's Hospital Network, Sydney Local Health District, South East Sydney Local Health District and Northern Sydney Local Health District

InsideOut in collaboration with Sydney Children's Hospital Network, Sydney Local Health District, South East Sydney Local Health District and Northern Sydney Local Health District have been funded by the Medical Research Futures Fund (MRFF) through Sydney Partners to examine the translation of evidence based treatment for children and adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa within NSW districts. The trial will determine barriers and enablers for the embedding of evidence based care in hospital and community settings and develop mechanisms to support it.

InsideOut in collaboration with the University of Western Sydney, Butterfly Foundation, NSW Health and headspace are conducting a research trial examining the effectiveness of online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa in headspace and community health
